Sharon Public Schools Collective Bargaining Agreement

“We have done our best and we will continue to fight here until schools are safe,” said Bernadette Murphy, President of the Sharon Teachers Association. SHARON, Mass. – Sharon`s teachers agreed to end their work stoppage because the union reached an agreement with the school district. “As part of the agreement, the Sharon Teachers Association acknowledged that its refusal to enter Sharon Schools for the past three days was a violation of national law prohibiting strikes by public sector employees,” Sharon School Board Chair Judy Crosby said Friday. “We`ve always said that our schools are safe for students and staff,” Crosby said. “Sharon still has a low instance of Covid-19. Our health and safety plan requires everyone in our schools to wear masks, has classrooms equipped according to the guidelines of the social distancing policy, and encourages frequent hand washing. It has always been about serving our students. Once we have them in class, we will be able to meet their educational, social and emotional needs. The Sharon Teachers Association and the city`s school board reached the agreement late Thursday after a hearing was held outside the state labor office on the petition. The borough has agreed to withdraw its request for a strike investigation as part of the agreement. In a brief telephone interview On Wednesday, Crosby declined to comment further on the reasons for his vote against Greer`s continued management of schools, historically considered one of the state`s powerful public systems. The controversy comes when schools reopened Wednesday in Sharon after teachers questioned whether school buildings would provide a safe workplace during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are pleased for our students to enter their schools for the first time in six months and to be with their classmates and teachers,” said Judy Crosby, Chair of the Sharon School Committee. As part of the agreement, the Sharon Teachers Association acknowledged that its refusal to enter Sharon Schools for the past three days was a violation of state law that prohibits strikes by public sector employees. “We`ve always said that our schools are safe for students and staff,” Crosby said, noting that Sharon still has a low example of COVID-19. The five Sharon schools will open on Wednesday, September 16, with distance classes taught by teachers in their classrooms. The first day of classes in person is Thursday, September 17. The county has planned teacher training in its buildings for Tuesday.
